Aside from his standup, Murphy was also a fan favorite actor on numerous TV shows and film. In addition to Chappelle's Show, Murphy made appearances on Are We There Yet, The Boondocks, Black Dynamite and Wild N Out.

In film, his most recent role was the horror comedy Meet the Blacks in 2016. He also had roles in Night at the Museum, Lottery Ticket and Roll Bounce.

His contributions to film went further than acting. He wrote the screenplay for Norbit, the infamous comedy starring his brother Eddie in multiple roles. Charlie also had a small voice role in the film.

Murphy had three children, two of which were with his late wife Tisha Taylor Murphy. She died in December 2009 after a battle with cervical cancer.
