Audiences headed into screenings of The Force Awakens knowing that Kylo Ren would be a major villain, only to discover an even bigger threat existed in Supreme Leader Snoke. As the character ordered around Kylo and members of The First Order, many began wondering about the leader's history, even questioning if the Emperor had returned. During a recent interview, actor Ian McDiarmid confirmed his Palpatine character was unquestionably dead.
"As far as the new films are concerned, I'm dead. There is no question about that," McDiarmid told BBC.
The question came about when discussing the possibility of his character ever being involved in a new film. While the saga continues to explore new corners of the galaxy far, far away, fans are also curious about how new films can incorporate familiar characters and environments. Considering that Obi-Wan and Yoda have "died" and their presences have still lived on, this does potentially allow for Palpatine to exist in other ways.
The Force Awakens only showed Snoke as a massive hologram, calling into question the actual identity of the individual. Andy Serkis provides the motion-capture performance for the character, who recently revealed that his character never shares the screen with Carrie Fisher's Leia in The Last Jedi.
"I had no scenes with Carrie but I did get to know her a little bit," Serkis confirmed. "She was an incredible human being with a wonderful personality and she's sadly, sadly missed and everyone who came into contact with her was really touched by her great energy and great sense of humor."
We'll get more information about Snoke when The Last Jedi will land in theaters on December 15.
