Star Wars: Daisy Ridley Doesn't See Rey Having "Romantic" Love in 'Episode IX'

From Han and Leia to Anakin and Padme, the Star Wars saga has documented some incredible love stories, a plot point the latest trilogy of films hasn't fully embraced. While the films may not have fully embraced love in a romantic way, star Daisy Ridley recently shared how she hopes the films continue to explore her character's intimacy with others.

"I haven't spoken to [Episode IX director] J.J. [Abrams] but I did a film this year that was not romantic. I think it's wonderful to have relationships that are not romantic," Ridley shared during a recent press event. "I don't think, in films, you always need a romantic relationship and I think friend relationships can be romantic in their gestures, in their intimacy, in all of that. So I think, hopefully, if Rey and Poe get to have some scenes together and stuff, that there will be intimacy, but it doesn't, for me, have to be romantic love."

When Rey debuted in The Force Awakens, she proved her independence and resourcefulness multiple times, demonstrating she didn't need to rely on anyone to help her survive. Finn (John Boyega), however, attempted to show these traits yet audiences could see how Rey captivated his focus.

Throughout much of The Last Jedi, Finn's devotion to Rey persisted, putting her safety ahead of his allegiances to any organizations, all while he was unknowingly growing closer to Rose (Kelly Marie Tran).

Given that Rey only officially met Poe (Oscar Isaac) at the end of this most recent film, it would seem like an odd choice for the two characters to develop a romantic relationship, but the upcoming Episode IX could be set much further in the future, potentially after the two had countless experiences together that created a romantic bond.

Were Rey to develop romantic feelings for any character, this would seemingly betray the ideals of the Jedi Order, which might result in Rey trying to bury any romantic feelings.

What could be an even more surprising revelation would be if Rey identified the connection she shared with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), something that was hinted at in The Last Jedi, as a romantic one. Many theories have popped up following their emotionally-charged interactions, with some ideas hinting at a familial connection while others think their intensity is driven by love.

Fans will see what's next for Rey when Episode IX hits theaters on December 20, 2019.
