Colin Trevorrow's Episode IX Script Getting Rewrite

Director of Star Wars: Episode IX, Colin Trevorrow, wrote the most recent treatment for the film with writing partner Derek Connolly, but The Hollywood Reporter claims the most recent draft will get a rewrite from Jack Thorne. This is only the latest in a string of behind-the-scenes creative shake-ups to the franchise, which includes the recent departure of directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller from the Han Solo spin-off film.

In 2015, Trevorrow scored a massive success with Jurassic World, which went on the be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. Prior to the huge Hollywood film, Trevorrow directed the indie romantic comedy Safety Not Guaranteed.

Earlier this year, Trevorrow's latest film, The Book of Henry, was met with poor reviews from critics, sitting at 23% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. With the film being released right around the time that Lord and Miller left the Han Solo film, many believed that Trevorrow's role as director of Episode IX could be called into question.

Thorne wrote this fall's Wonder, starring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson, the heartwarming tale of a young boy with facial differences entering the fifth grade and the challenges he must overcome. Much like the tone of Book of Henry, Wonder looks to explore themes of family and the challenges one must face when becoming an adult.

In addition to Wonder, Thorne worked on the British TV series The Fades, The Cast-Offs, The Last Panthers and National Treasure.

The announced rewrite doesn't necessarily mean Trevorrow's leadership is in question, as the script's original treatment was conceived by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters December 15 while Episode IX is slated to hit theaters May 24, 2019.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the second film in the new Star Wars sequel trilogy that began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. The film will deal with Luke training Rey to become a, and possibly the last, Jedi. Meanwhile, the Resistance, including Poe Dameron and First Order defector Finn, continues to fight against the First Order, led by General Hux, while Supreme Leader Snoke and his Dark Side follower Kylo Ren continue their mysterious plot.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.
