Faith Writer Tapped To Scribe Rogue One Comic For Marvel

Sometimes with comic book adaptations, you have to go in with a little Faith. Luckily for Star Wars fans the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story miniseries from Marvel will have some built in courtesy of Faith scribe, Jody Houser.

Houser has received rave reviews for her delightful hero in the Valiant Universe, and now she gets to play in the Star Wars universe in a new prequel series to the hit film. She announced the gig on Twitter, saying "Big news! I'm writing the Star Wars #RogueOne comic for @Marvel!"

Speaking to EW about the six-issue series, which she's working on alongside artist Emilio Laiso, she was asked how the series will compare to the film. Houser said "The comics will definitely expand on what was seen in both Rogue One the film and the novelization. Lucasfilm and Gareth Edwards had a bunch of ideas for extra scenes and character moments that didn't make it into the film. I'm having a lot of fun playing around with those. Adaptations across different forms of media have always been a great opportunity to explore other facets of the story, and we're excited to have new material in the Rogue One comic."

The tone of Rogue One was much darker than some of the previously released material, and it's a tone that Houser will definitely play with in the adaptation.

"Rogue One definitely puts the "War" in Star Wars in a way that we haven't necessarily seen in the movies before. Sure, we've had populated worlds and stations the size of moons blown up, Order 66, but we're not used to ALL of our leads being expendable. We're not used to seeing so much of the death and destruction close up. I think stripping away some of the fantasy and raising the stakes is a brave move, especially in a precedent-setting movie like this. It adds weight and meaning to the events that immediately follow in A New Hope by showing the cost. Of course, I did start my comics career writing primarily horror and tragedy/tear-jerker shorts, so I may be a bit biased here…"

You can view two of the launch covers in the gallery, and the first issue should hit comic shops sometime in April.

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are producing, with John Knoll and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers.
