'Science and Star Wars' Web Series Launches in September

Disney announced earlier this year that a new series, Science and Star Wars, would explore the connections between real-world science and the various pieces of technology seen throughout the Star Wars saga. The latest episode of The Star Wars Show revealed that the series would debut in September, as well as debuted a series trailer. You can learn more about the show in the video below, starting around the 1:50 mark.

Science and Star Wars is a series that explores, explains, and demonstrates parallels between the Lucasfilm sci-fi epic and real-world scientific breakthroughs the saga has inspired. The IBM-sponsored series, hosted by Anthony Carboni, will feature IBM researchers, science experts, guest stars, and IBM's Watson artificial-intelligence platform. It will run exclusively on Facebook through the Facebook Anthology branded-content program.

The Star Wars films have always been more fantasy than science fiction, often opting to avoid the laws of physics as we know them to tell a compelling story. In the 40 years since the saga was born, technological advances have made the impossible seem somewhat more possible, while other elements of the series remain hard to believe.

The new series won't be the first time that specials have brought together the leading experts on various scientific subjects to get to the truth behind the fiction, but the short-form content looks to bring together a variety of entertaining guests from Star Wars, ranging from young Boba Fett actor Daniel Logan to C-3PO himself, Anthony Daniels.

In 2005, the Discovery Channel produced the mini-series Science of Star Wars, which explored how the series had impacted technological innovations. With 12 years having passed since that series' debut, there are even more technological advancements to explore.

Also in 2005, the traveling exhibit Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination debuted at the Museum of Science, Boston that included artifacts from the saga itself, in addition to giving guests a hands-on look at the scientific realities of the films. The exhibit was partnered with a sky show that explored various planets from the Star Wars films, displaying the realities of a planet like Mustafar or Hoth.
