Mark Hamill Has One Criticism For Modern Superhero Movies

06/12/2017 06:43 pm EDT

Hollywood just can't get enough of superheroes. From Marvel to DC, not a year goes by without a comic book blockbuster. The heroic genre has proven to be one of the industry's most lucrative pursuits as the MCU and DCEU gross more than a billion dollars annually. However, for one Star Wars actor, the category needs to work on something if it wants to extend its shelf life.

Speaking to USA Today, Mark Hamill shared his expertise on blockbusters recently when he assessed modern superhero films. The actor, who first played Luke Skywalker back in the 1970s, said the comic book genre needs to diversify in order to survive.

"I don't know what's going on with superhero movies. They're fantastic, but I think we're reaching a point of oversaturation," Hamill confessed.

"So that's why the story is so important, is that the gimmicks and all that, they can only take you so far. That's what I want, better stories."

Of course, Hamill is no stranger to comic book affairs. The actor is a beloved member of both Marvel and DC's animated universes. Hamill has voiced Hobgoblin for Spider-Man and taken the Joker to task for Batman. The actor may have reason to be diplomatic with his statements, but Hamill has a point: superhero movies are everywhere these days.

Still, it seems like Hollywood is doing its best to adapt with the times. Films like Wonder Woman broke ground as its female-led and female-directed history has inspired millions. Wonder Woman has already made box office history, and other recent superhero pursuits like Logan and Deadpool managed to shake up the comic book genre.
