The Walking Dead has been known to hide many Easter Eggs throughout its episodes. This season alone, the series has thrown back to older episodes, as well as hinted at the cult zombie film Night Of The Comet.

In this past episode, Service, audiences completely missed a subtle tease to the legendary mob film, The Godfather.

In the episode, Negan and the saviors showed up to Alexandria early, and proceeded to take much of what the residents had in their possession. The Saviors ended up taking most of the matresses throughout the community, leaving Rick and his people sleeping on the floor.

At the end of the episode, Michonne found all of their mattresses in a pile on the side of the road. The beds had all been burnt, and this was meant to be another sign that Negan was enslaving the community.

Negan could have taken anything he wanted from Alexandria, and destroyed it to send a message to Rick and his people. The beds were a sign of comfort, and something that wasn't entirely necessary, so it allowed the villain to shake things up without truly endangering his new 'employees'.

The decision to take the mattresses, and subsequently burn them, was also an enormous nod to the violent world of gangster warfare in The Godfather films.

In the film, the gangs used a very speific term when going to war with a rival. They called it, "Going To The Mattresses."

This term was a declaration of war, and that was exactly what Negan was intending with the message. Not only was he declaring war with Rick, but he was saying the war had already been won.

This theory, first posted on reddit, makes a strong case for the continued use of Easter Eggs in The Walking Dead this season.
