The Walking Dead appears to be all set for a flash forward sequence in its Season Eight premiere, but it may eventually start taking a look back in time.

While visiting the set of The Walking Dead for its 100th episode, ComicBook.com was witness to Andrew Lincoln decked out in his cropped hair, big grey beard get up, what has been dubbed "Old Man Rick" since debuting in the Season Eight trailer at San Diego Comic-Con. It was clear at the time, the show was injecting some sort of flash forward or dream sequence to the mix with the episode.

With the manipulation of the linear storytelling on the horizon, the idea of flashbacks similar to those used on Fear the Walking Dead is a question many will have. According to The Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple, he has also considered such a move.

"I mean, we are trying to do different things every season, we're trying to reinvent the show every episode," Gimple said. "I'll just say we haven't done that much, so, but it also might be one of those things that we get to, that I'm holding onto."

The Walking Dead used a few flashbacks in its early seasons, a tool which unveiled Shane and Lori's journey out of Atlanta during the early days of the apocalypse. Several fallen characters have also returned to the show in flashback form, including Hershel and Abraham. Season Eight might just see something similar, beginning with its premiere episode.

Still, it's hard to imagine the show delving too far into any past scenarios, especially prior to the apocalypse. The cast of The Walking Dead have all adopted very different looks by comparison to the show's earliest days, and none more than Carl Grimes actor Chandler Riggs.
