With the original cast of The Walking Dead continue to thin as seasons go on, Rick Grimes actor Andrew Lincoln has begun to focus on an end game.

Spoilers for The Walking Dead Episode 8x08, How It's Gotta Be, follow.

With the death of Rick's son Carl being carried out across the midseason finale and premiere episodes in 's eighth season, Andrew Lincoln is beginning to realize having an ending for the AMC series in mind is important.

"I've said to you before and I really feel that the fans — and also for my own satisfaction — that there deserves to be an end point," Lincoln told THR. "There needs to be an end game and that is something that is definitely being talked about. I can't get into all of that. But all of that will be answered. As I've said to you before — and I will continue to say — my relationship with Rick Grimes is far from over."

While Lincoln seems to be interested in continuing to tell Rick's story in saying his "relationship with Rick Grimes is far from over," the actor will not give any clues as to whether or not Rick's demise is actually on the horizon. "That's a question I'm not at liberty to answer," Lincoln said. "It's such an extraordinary story and in my heart, it deserves some resolution."

Lincoln does, however, have hope he will be back for a ninth season which is yet to be officially announced by AMC. "We'll see how this back eight plays out," Lincoln said. "The Walking Dead has been an extraordinary journey that isn't finished yet."

"It's to be continued, is what I'd say in all areas," Lincoln said. "[Carl's death] certainly feels like — when Glenn was killed, it felt like buttons had been pressed — and I certainly feel like this is the second button that has been pressed."

Carl's death, of course, is a major departure from The Walking Dead comics. Should Lincoln's thoughts of the AMC series having an ending anywhere near now, the TV show would be departing its source material in major ways, once again. The Skybound/Image Comics series is still in print, with issue #175 set to introduce the "New World Order" story in January of 2018.
