A Carol and Daryl romance has been one of the best known pieces of fan fiction coming from any TV show, movie, or comic book. The Walking Dead's characters have had an undeniable chemistry from the earliest episodes of the series but seldom does it appear to be anything more than a strong, platonic bond.
There are moments, such a Carol's joke atop a prison yard school bus in Season 3, which give fans pulling for their relationship to go to the next level a bit of hope but, for the most part, there has been little to support the "Caryl" argument recently.
Carol and Daryl's recent reunion was a beautiful moment between the two characters. A wounded and recovering Daryl humbly asked Carol why she abandoned Alexandria, to which she had little response other than feeling as though she had to go. Many of the fans pulling for something romantic were screaming "Kiss her!" at their television set.
Carol actress Melissa McBride, however, has a slightly different perspective of the relationship than those fans, as she revealed in an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com.
"There is a part of me that sees them both when they are with another as sort of a wounded child," McBride said. "It's like sometimes I see them when they joke together, or they're happy together, or they're sharing smokes together, or arguing together, being nitpicky together. I just see like Daryl could have reverted to that wounded child on the porch at the reunion, and I sometimes I see Carol the same way, like a little girl almost, younger."
McBride does not rule out romance in her description, though she does say it is not a paternal relationship like it almost appeared to be during their reunion when he looked up to her and she provided dinner. "I think it is they're wounded children, really get one another," McBride said. "I don't see her becoming a mother to him at all. I see her becoming that wounded friend."
With Carol set to return in Sunday night's Bury Me Here episode, fans might get a glimpse of how Daryl's recent lie effected, however it might be a couple of weeks before before the two characters are seen together again on a Sunday night.
