In Sunday night's Midseason 3 finale of Fear the Walking Dead, Mercedes Mason will finally return to the series as Ofelia Salazar.
The return of Ofelia, after being absent for the entirety of Season 3 to date, comes in unexpected fashion if the preview for the two-hour finale is any indication. Ofelia was spotted with injuries and scars on her face but, more importantly, at the side of Walker and his Native American clan -- the enemies of the Otto and Clark families.
For Mason, the intriguing upcoming twist was nothing short of exciting.
"The worst part of this has been literally sitting on the sidelines," Mason said. "I was benched for way too long. The fans, I felt so bad, because they kept asking me literally at the half set, 'Where's Ofelia?' And I couldn't say anything. I couldn't answer anything. It was so frustrating only because I'm terrible at keeping secrets and it took every ounce of my strength, if you want to call it that, to not just blurt out to every single fan who asked me exactly where I was, when I was going to come back, and what was happening."
Mason, a huge fan of The Walking Dead universe before joining Fear the Walking Dead three years ago, is eager to see how fans receive her character's return to the series. "It's so fun to see how excited and invested people are in the character because they obviously really wondered where she is," Mason said. "It's a great little reveal when she does actually get presented because then, there's all this hoopla surrounding it, asking what's the new dynamic is going to be because Ofelia's been gone now from the part for so long that it's almost like starting from scratch. In the apocalypse, everything changes so quickly."
As for specific details regarding Ofelia's return, Mason can't give away spoilers ahead of the episode but has a specific tease to share with fans. "All I can is that Ofelia almost died in the desert," Mason said. "She was saved. The people who saved her is who she's now loyal to and dedicated to and that's who you're going to find her with."
Now, "she has completely new alliances."
