John Bernecker, a vetted stuntman in the industry, passed away in mid-July after he fell more than 20 feet onto a concrete floor during filming of Season 8 of The Walking Dead.
On Sunday, he will be remembered by the television community at large when he is honored during the Emmy Awards.
His mother, Susan Sherlock-Bernecker, will be on hand for the presentation and told WWLTV.com that the emotion has been overwhelming, but that the outpouring of support has helped her to carry on.
"I've cried so much in the last two months that's why I am not breaking out now, because it's like, how much can you cry?" said Bernecker.
"I've never heard of them doing that for a stunt guy, you know. It's usually the big actors."
Bernecker passed away after a stunt went wrong during production of The Walking Dead's eighth season during a scene with Dwight actor Austin Amelio. The actor fell from a balcony on the Sanctuary set and missed his landing by "inches."
The incident happened on The Walking Dead's set in Georgia, and Bernecker was Medevaced to the hospital where he was being treated in the intensive care unit before his family ultimately made the decision to take him off of life support.
Born in New Orleans, Bernecker had a lengthy resume with various film and television projects. His IMDb page lists over 100 credits dating all the way back to 2009. Aside from The Walking Dead, Bernecker has worked on projects like 24: Legacy, The Fate of the Furious, The Hunger Games franchise, and more.
His mother said that her son was proud of his work, even if it was rarely him being the forward-facing actor.
"He was paying other people's rent to help them make it," she said. "Now who does that in a movie and TV business? So he was helping other people. He wanted them to be just as successful as he was."
