Major spoilers for The Walking Dead 8x08, "How It's Gotta Be."

AMC has aired an extended sneak peek from The Walking Dead's mid-season premiere, picking up right where the mid-season finale left off.

Negan and the Saviors' explosive attack on Alexandria has devastated the community. Carl stuck around to evacuate the walled-off safe zone as it came under fire by grenades, stepping up as interim leader and shepherding its citizens to safety in the sewers below.

Michonne, Daryl, Tara, Rosita and Dwight connect with Rick and Michonne in the tunnels, only for Carl to reveal to the pair a nasty-looking walker bite — one from which he won't be able to survive.

The first episode of the back half of the season will wrap up Carl's story, but there's still the matter of dealing with Negan and his army.

Dwight lead a Savior convoy into a trap, where they were fired upon by the Alexandrian foursome in the bushes. Their efforts took out a good number of Saviors, but Laura — the Savior with the barcode neck tattoo — managed to escape after learning Dwight is the Savior mole, information she'll readily hand over to Negan.

With his deception revealed and unable to return to the Sanctuary, Rosita brought Dwight along.

"After they let up, after they're gone, that's when we go," Dwight says.
"Okay," Rosita says, having learned her lesson about patience. "We wait."
A shell-shocked Michonne just nods.
"You sure going to Hilltop's the best plan?" Dwight asks.
"You got a better one?" Rosita says. He doesn't.
"All of you... in one place, together..." It's not a good idea.
"All of us. Together," Daryl growls. "We'll be their worst damn nightmare."

The massive damage sustained by Alexandria and the Kingdom will force the alliance to assemble at the Hilltop with Maggie, which is currently hosting nearly 40 Savior prisoners — all of whom just may wish for the death penalty when they meet a very pissed off crew of Alexandrians.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC for its mid-season premiere in February.
