Despite the public backlash against the fast food chain in what critics have called a lack of preparation, McDonald's recent promotion of Szechuan Sauce and the subsequent response resulted in a boost for the company's stock.

After opening on Wall Street today, McDonald's stock rose 0.5% to $160.21; a decent performance for the day after the stunt gone awry. McDonald's opened on the New York Stock Exchange at $159.60 per share.

The Szechuan Sauce campaign was part of McDonald's new promotion for their new Crispy Buttermilk Tenders menu item, though it's a badly kept secret that was meant to capitalize on the popularity of Rick and Morty. Though it wasn't officially tied to the show, the promotional sauce's resurgence in popularity is almost entirely due to being featured in the animated series' third season premiere.

But many fans were not able to get the sauce due to limited availability and overwhelming demand (that's economics for you, folks). There were many complaints and criticisms levied at the fast food giant, and there were even reports of police responding to some stores.

Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland also expressed his disappointment with McDonald's for their promotion and asked fans not to be angry with the employees of the store who had no control over the situation.

The show's popularity overwhelmed McDonald's preparation for the campaign, leaving many disappointed. But the entitled attitude of a consumers wanting a condiment contributes to the problematic fanbase, which was already scrutinized for some people harassing some women on the show's writing staff.

McDonald's has responded to the fan outrage and decided to bring more supplies to more stores, hoping to give everyone the opportunity of trying that sweet Mulan McNugget sauce.

And despite all of the fan criticisms, they still managed to put more money in the company's pocket and give them more exposure than a commercial could provide.

Rick and Morty's third season just wrapped up, with no word on when fans can expect to see Season Four.
