Guardians Of The Galaxy Concept Art Reveals Gamora's Original Purple Design

In just a couple of weeks, the Guardians of the Galaxy will make their comeback when the team gets a sequel flick. The space-bound superheroes made their debut a few years back when Marvel Studios released the first Guardians of the Galaxy feature, and the action-comedy raked in all kinds of cash. The film helped bring lesser-known heroes like Star-Lord and Groot to the public, but some of the heroes originally looked very different from how moviegoers saw them on-screen. Thanks to one concept artist, fans can now see one very early design for Gamora, and the green-skinned alien is missing one of her defining traits.

You know, because she is purple.

Over on Instagram, Andy Park recently shared another one of his concept pieces for the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. The artist has worked on several other films for Marvel Studios such as Captain America: Civil War, but it looks like his work on Gamora's early designs were some of the most fun he's done.

"Closeup of a concept design version I painted for Gamora. This was early days on the first #GuardiansoftheGalaxy so we played with the idea of giving her a different skin color. I had fun with this one," Park caption the stunning photo.

The image itself shows Gamora looking totally different from her theatrical debut. The space assassin is shown with muted purple skin, and a slew of distinct facial markings given her a more similar surgical look to her adopted sister Nebula. The look is a massive departure from Gamora's traditional look in the comics, and it makes the character appear as if she's more closely related to Nebula. After all, it is hard to overlook the sister's cool skin-tones and mottled scars which came courtesy of Papa Thanos.

Ultimately, Guardians of the Galaxy opted to have Gamora stick closer to her traditional appearance, but the concept artwork is something fans can wonder 'what if' about. There may be room one day for Park to recycle such a design for a future MCU hero.

Set to the backdrop of 'Awesome Mixtape #2,' Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
