Beauty And The Beast Breaks Batman V Superman's Box Office Record

Movie goers were very interested in some Batman-on-Superman action last year when Zack Snyder's super-fight film premiered, taking an opening weekend haul of $166 million.

Turns out, they like some Belle-on-Beast action just a bit more.

Disney's live action Beauty and the Beast remake has made $170 million on its opening weekend, smashing the previous March record held by 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

It makes the Bill Condon-directed film the highest grossing film in the month's history and adding another feather in Disney's extremely lucrative cinematic cap.

The film has already made its budget back, at $160 million, but factoring marketing and distribution costs means it will still take time for the film to become profitable. It won't be long, though, when factoring in worldwide box office hauls over its lifetime, as well as home video and syndication revenues.

Beauty and the Beast is another success story in Disney's venture of turning their animated classics into live action films. They're currently developing movies based on Dumbo, Mulan and Aladdin.

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice held the March record for just one year, but Disney's magic is hard to contain. The Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck-starring film now has record for the 9th Highest Gross for Opening Weekend Box Offices.

Beauty and the Beast just barely surpassed the last Emma Watson-starring success in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2, which made $169 million—making the Disney film the 7th Highest Grossing Opening Box Office in history.

Belle is now within striking distance of Marvel Studios' Iron Man 3, though it appears that it will fall short of the Robert Downey Jr and Shane Black film's $174 million. Disney can't beat Disney, apparently.

The House of Mouse holds 6 of the top 7 spots on the record list, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens taking #1 with $247 million. The only spot on the list that isn't a Disney property is Universal Pictures' Jurassic World, which sits at #2 with $208 million.

Beauty and the Beast is dominating theaters now.
