In the world of superhero movies, it seems like easter eggs are never-ending. Studios like Marvel and DC have thousands of inside jokes and obscure references to pack into their blockbusters, and fans have spent a long time trying to suss out each and every one. Famously, there are still movies like Guardians of the Galaxy which still house undiscovered easter eggs, but other films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice have less persistent sleuths on them.

Until now, that is.

Over on Reddit, one keen-eyed user spotted a subtle and playful nod to the Watchmen in an unassuming Batman v Superman scene. User @BrunoBots spotted a copy of the iconic, gritty Cold War tale in the bookcase of Lois Lane. The book appears in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, but its distinctive spine is impossible to overlook. Its black background and yellowed block font make it an easy target for DC Comics readers once they have been pointed in its direction.

Of course, this is not the only Watchmen reference to make it into the DC Extended Universe. Later on in Batman v Superman, fans can spot a reference to the comic when Superman takes on Gotham's Knight. And, with this new easter egg spotted, fans will once again begin questioning how Alan Moore's seminal story could tie into the larger DC Comics cinematic sphere.

Russ Burlingame, ComicBook.com's resident DC expert, speculated on the possibility of Watchmen colliding with the DCEU. Not long ago, he questioned whether the company's recent Rebirth storyline could provide impetus for the crossover, and here's what he had to say:

"There's zero chance the Watchmen characters exist in the DC Extended Universe as it currently exists. Watchmen is a period piece that's entrenched in the Cold War, and in the world of the story, Doctor Manhattan changed the face of the world forever when he appeared. To assume Amanda Waller would say virtually identical things about Superman in Suicide Squad and make no comparison to Manhattan guarantees that Manhattan did not exist in the world of Suicide Squad.

Second is, that being the case, how could they bring the Watchmen characters into the DCEU if Rebirth were such a massive hit that they decided they really wanted to?

It would probably be Justice League 3."

So, what do you think? Would you want to see folks like Dr. Manhattan worm their way into the DCEU in the future? Let us know what you think in the comments below. And, if you want to check out more Batman v Superman easter eggs, you can check out dozens of them here!
