"D-Day" Comes to iZombie

Throughout iZombie's third season, many characters have been anticipating - and in some cases, avoiding - what has become known as 'D-Day.'

Discovery Day, the day that humans become aware of the existence of zombies, has arrived for the citizens of Seattle. After creating a widespread panic about the Aleutian flu, Filmore Graves injected vials of the vaccination with zombie blood, turning all of those who were given it into zombies.

Liv Moore (Rose McIver) convinced local newsman Johnny Frost (Daran Norris) to announce the existence of zombies due to the vaccine, thus preventing more humans from getting injected. Soon after, Chase Graves (Jason Dohring) sent out a video message to panicking citizens. In it, he revealed to the country that zombies are real, and would continue to remain confined to Seattle if the rest of America donated the brains of their deceased to Filmore Graves.

According to iZombie showrunner Rob Thomas, this brings the larger world of iZombie into uncharted territory in the show's fourth season.

"Here's what essentially Chase Graves is saying to the rest of the planet," Thomas explained in an interview with ComicBook. "We're going to take Seattle, we're going to tan and dye, you can't tell us from the humans. And if you want to nuke us, you're going to have to nuke a half a million humans as well. There are 10,000 zombies, any of whom could start the apocalypse, so the ball is in your court."

While that conflict is pretty tense, Thomas argues that it almost could've been worse. The showrunner argued that Liv's decision to make Johnny say the announcement did have a positive effect, despite Chase still enacting that larger D-Day plot.

"At the end of the day, I sort of feel like Liv's decision is trumped by Chase running that video," Thomas revealed. "What Liv might have accomplished is, rather than there being 20,000 zombies in Seattle, there are 10,000 zombies -- so if she can take credit for something, it's that. Liv probably should deserve the credit for saving a good number of people from turning into zombies."

Nevertheless, the finale's closing moments showed iZombie's drastically 'new reality' already in action. Fans will just have to wait and see whether it can be sustained in season 4 - and what that will mean for Liv and the rest of Team Z.

Liv (Rose McIver) uncovers a shocking truth with far-reaching consequences. A reeling Major (Robert Buckley) looks to the future, and Clive (Malcolm Goodwin) gets closure. Meanwhile, Blaine (David Anders) makes a business proposal. Rahul Kohli and Aly Michalka also star.

iZombie airs on Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. "Looking For Mr. Goodbrain, Part 2" premieres on June 27.
