Jay Baruchel Defends Batman v Superman: "World's Most Expensive Indie Film"

While promoting the release of Goon: Last of the Enforcers — which he directed, co-wrote, and reprises his supporting role as hockey super-fan and Doug Glatt's best friend, Pat — Jay Baruchel (Man Seeking Woman, How to Train Your Dragon) was asked to name some recent films that he really enjoyed.

He started off by praising Tom Ford's psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals, which he described as "gorgeous and compelling," and then the next film that came to his mind was a four-time Razzie winner.

"Batman v Superman…Dawn of Justice: Ultimate Edition is probably the film I've seen the most from last year," Baruchel admitted to JoBlo. "I've watched it about seven times…"

The interviewer then pointed out how Zack Snyder's divisive film has a "really distinct vision" as compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"THANK YOU!" he excitedly agreed, then explained why. "This is what I said, even when I saw the theatrical one and didn't love it. In its weakest moment, it has more choice, style and commitment to it than the best moment in [Captain America:] Civil War. Civil War, I can't tell you what it's about or who made it. You watch BATMAN V SUPERMAN you know exactly what it's about and he fucking committed to a choice and DC always does that."

He added, "I think history's going to regard that as the world's most expensive indie film."

The film also stars Oscar nominees Amy Adams (American Hustle, Man of Steel) as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) as Lex Luthor, Diane Lane (Unfaithful, Man of Steel) as Martha Kent, and Laurence Fishburne (What's Love Got to Do with It, Man of Steel) as Perry White; Oscar winners Jeremy Irons (Reversal of Fortune) as Alfred, and Holly Hunter (The Piano) as Senator Finch; and Gal Gadot (the Fast and Furious films) as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.

Snyder directed from a screenplay written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer, based on characters from DC Comics, including Batman, created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, and Superman, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The film was produced by Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder, with Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns and David S. Goyer serving as executive producers.
