'Justice League' Crosses $500 Million at Worldwide Box Office

Despite the current discourse about the choices that resulted in a "Frankenstein" theatrical version of Justice League, or what the future of the DC Extended Universe will be, it seems that the film is slowly but steadily bringing in the box office returns. As of writing this, Justice League has officially crossed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office.

Forbes reports that as of today, Justice League has earned $178.87 million domestically, with an additional $320+ million overseas, for a total of $505 million.

Justice League undoubtedly underperformed in its opening weekend, domestically, failing to crack the $100 million barrier. However, Warner Bros. has been in this position before, as critical reactions to Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Suicide Squad all forced the studio into an slow uphill battle to secure box office profits. In the end, each of the "controversial" films earned somewhere between $500 million - 1 billion, with the breakout Wonder Woman movie coming closest with an $800 million haul.

That's not a terrible track record, but the fact that the DCEU has yet to break the $1 billion barrier is a stigma that is still hanging over the DC/WB like a thick fog. More to the point: the lukewarm reception of Justice League by both critics and fans makes the prospects for future DCEU projects (like Aquaman) that much harder.

Meanwhile, Marvel is gearing up for its most lucrative success ever, thanks to Avengers: Infinity War.

Justice League is now in theaters; Aquaman arrives on December 21, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Wonder Woman 2 on November 1st, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020.
