Justice League Success Will Determine The DCEU's Future Line-Up

The DC Extended Universe is still in its beginning stages, but it holds potential which few other franchise's can match. This weekend, Wonder Woman gave fans a glimpse into how successful the DCEU can become; The standalone film overcame expectations and is being heralded as one of DC's best films yet. Wonder Woman marks a fresh take on the DCEU as it follows three controversial blockbusters, and now it will come down to Justice League to continue the trend this November. After all, the future of the DCEU is riding on how the ensemble flick is received.

Recently, Forbes released an article by noted reporter and DC writer Mark Hughes. The writer examined the DCEU and its future in light of Wonder Woman's overwhelming success. It is in his article that Hughes says Warner Bros. plans to slow its roll on any new projects to see whether Justice League is a hit or miss.

"The truth is, a lot is riding on how 2017 pans out. The studio wants to see how Wonder Woman performs (so far so good on that front) and how Justice League turns out, before they barrel ahead with multiple more films every year," Hughes wrote.

"More films will get made, don't worry, but it makes sense to ease off the gas a little and be certain about the best route ahead."

For now, the only film Warner Bros. will move forward with is Aquaman as the project just began filming down in Australia. Other projects like The Batman, Gotham City Sirens, Man of Steel 2, and many more will have to wait. Standalone films for Batgirl and Nightwing were confirmed just this year alone. While hype for the DCEU is high thanks to Wonder Woman, Warner Bros. wants to make sure it isn't counting all its eggs before they hatch.

By waiting for Justice League reviews to trickle in, Warner Bros. is saving itself some grief. The response to the film will inform the studio of whether their superhero aesthetic is finally working or not. The wait will also clue Warner Bros. into which heroes are the most popular. Much like how Harley Quinn's breakout role in Suicide Squad got her a standalone film, a knockout performance from Cyborg my expedite his solo film.

Warner Bros. can't afford to take a full break from the DCEU films which still need development, but it can give certain things a raincheck. Building a cinematic universe is difficult, but it can be done; Just see Marvel Studios for details. Justice League is set to provide a revamped foundation for the DCEU following a string of preliminary flops. It has never been more important for Warner Bros. to get a film right than it is now, and DC diehards are hoping Justice League will benefit from the pressure when all is said and done.

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder, from a screenplay by Chris Terrio, based on a story by Snyder and Terrio, and stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Amy Adams, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J. K. Simmons, and Ciarán Hinds.
