SYFY's Krypton Series Will Include Notable DC Comics Characters

Superman's story is about to get a whole lot deeper, as SYFY has officially ordered Krypton to series. The show tells the tale of Superman's grandfather, and about how the House of El began. As you can imagine, many DC fans have one question on their minds regarding the new series; "Does it connect to the DC Extended Universe?"

This is a valid question, as there are some obvious signs pointing to a connection. David S. Goyer - who wrote Man of Steel and executive produced Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - is credited as the creator of the Krypton series. Goyer also wrote the pilot episode, and is serving as one of the executive producers.

Fans also point to the House El crest as a connection. When the teaser for the series leaked online, many noted that the crest was the exact same style as the one depicted in Man of Steel.

During a conference call regarding the next wave of programming at SYFY, we got a chance to ask the Chris McCumber, President of Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, about the show's existence within the DCEU. McCumber didn't exactly address the DCEU connection, claiming that he couldn't speak on that at this time.

However, he did reveal that Krypton will have plenty of other connections. McCumber revealed that the series will "definitely contain other DC comics characters in the Krypton world." As to avoid spoilers, McCumber didn't mention who exactly would appear, but he did note that SYFY has "had plenty of talks with Warner Bros." about the use of multiple characters.

Since this series takes place two generations before Superman, it's unlikely that any of the popular Justice League members could appear. However, the door does seem open for more space-level characters like Braniac, Martian Manhunter, or Abin Sur.

There is no definite release date for Krypton - which is currently in production - but McCumber revealed that it could premiere in the early months of 2018.

Set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel's home planet, Krypton follows Superman's grandfather (Cameron Cuffe, The Halcyon) - whose House of El was ostracized and shamed - as he fights to redeem his family's honor and save his beloved world from chaos. Based on DC characters, Krupton is from Warner Horizon Scripted Television and is executive produced by David S. Goyer through his Phantom Four banner. Damon Kindler (Sleepy Hollow) will serve as executive producer and showrunner.
