Legends Of Tomorrow Will Bring Back Rip Hunter In Season 3

Now that Legends of Tomorrow's second season is officially in the books, many fans - including those of us at ComicBook.com - are curious exactly what the series will do in Season 3.

While it would be safe to assume that most - if not all - of the ensemble cast will be returning for a third go-around, there is the question of Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill). The former captain of the Waverider, and the man who first brought the Legends together, ended the season on a relatively ambiguous note, departing from the team after seeing that they have excelled in his absence.

While some might see this departure as a sign that Rip will be missing from Season 3 of Legends, one of the show's executive producers says it isn't so cut and dry. During an interview on Entertainment Weekly's Superhero Insider podcast, Marc Guggenheim teased that audience haven't seen the last of Rip - but that he will return in a unique way.

"We've got plans for Rip for next year." Guggenheim explained. "It's just in a different capacity than him being a member of the team."

Considering the journey that Rip went through in the show's sophomore season, this won't be the first time that viewers see the character in a new capacity.

After scattering the Legends all throughout history in the season premiere, Rip wiped his own memory and hid himself in 1970s Los Angeles, in order to safely guard the Spear of Destiny. When the Legends and the Legion of Doom noticed his location, they scrambled to find him, and the Legion briefly used him as a brainwashed pawn in their game.

With this in mind, it's worth speculating exactly what new role Rip will inhabit in the third season. There's also the question of how many episodes the former Time Master will appear in, as the nature of his departure certainly means that Darvill could appear in as many episodes as he chooses.
