The Flash: Robert Zemeckis Reportedly The Frontrunner To Direct

The Flash may be on its way to a much-needed boost. After a series of director shake-ups, a new report has surfaced which suggests Warner Bros. is circling a new director for the film. Following the recent leave of Rick Famuyiwa, Heroic Hollywood's Umberto Gonzalez is reporting that Robert Zemeckis is currently the frontrunner to direct the blockbuster.

So far, Warner Bros. has declined to comment on the report, but it is not the first time Zemeckis' name has been brought into this conversation. Back in April, rumors began circulating that the director was in talks to oversee The Flash. In a video, the folks over at Screen Junkies dropped the scoop about the Back to the Future director. However, at that time, Gonzalez refuted the statement and said it was "not true." The source even went so far as to say no talks were on-going and that Warner Bros. was still meeting with other directors.

Still, there is no confirmation on whether the report has any grounds. Fans do hope the rumors have some inkling of truth. After all, The Flash has had back luck with its directors. First, Seth Grahame-Smith exited the the project before Famuyiwa parted for reported creative differences. Since the latter director bailed, there has been no talk about The Flash and its next director. And, when one of the film's actor was asked about filming recently, Billy Crudup said he had no idea what was going on behind-the-scenes.

"Oh, no, I don't. It's unclear at the moment. Ezra's schedule - Ezra's a busy man. He's very popular and excellent," Crudup told Bad Taste Italy.

Currently, The Flash is expected to be released on March 23, 2018. If Zemeckis is brought on-board soon, it is not impossible to think the film could make that date still. However, the likelihood of The Flash being pushed back is becoming more and more real with every passing day. Warner Bros. has stressed it is not interested in rushing the director hunt given the project's past issues. If Zemeckis is the right guy for the job, the director will surely be tasked with some pre-production work before filming can get underway. With Ezra Miller set to begin filming on the Fantastic Beasts sequel this summer, production on The Flash would have to wait until the star's schedule frees up.
