The Flash: Grant Gustin On If Barry Will Sacrifice Himself For Wally

03/13/2017 11:51 pm EDT

Savitar prophesied earlier this season that someone from Team Flash would "suffer a fate worse than death." And in last week's episode, we finally learned that the unlucky team member is... Wall West. Yup, the impetuous speedster was goaded into opening a portal to the Speed Force by Savitar. Wally then tossed the remaining piece of the Philosopher's Stone (Shame on you, Caitlin Snow!) into it. He thought that would put a stop to the self-proclaimed God of Speed, but instead, Wally freed Savitar from his Speed Force prison and swapped places with him.

"Barry was so busy trying to save Iris he didn't realize it was Wally he should have been protecting," executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told EW. "That's going to lead Barry to risk everything to go into the Speed Force to get him back, but someone always has to be trapped in the Speed Force prison. So the question in that episode becomes: Is Barry going to sacrifice himself for Wally, and how are they going to get Wally out?"

The Flash himself, Grant Gustin, knows the answer to the Kreisberg's first question. "He's willing to make the ultimate sacrifice when he enters the Speed Force," Gustin shared. "Barry is willing and wants to stay and replace Wally in the Speed Force forever. He thinks it's what he deserves, to spend the rest of eternity in the Speed Force."

BARRY TURNS TO THE SPEED FORCE – Desperate to stop Savitar and save his friends, Barry (Grant Gustin) turns to the Speed Force for answers. H.R. (Tom Cavanagh) gives Jesse (Violett Beane) some advice.

Gregory Smith directed the episode written by Brooke Roberts & Judalina Neira.
