The Flash: Candice Patton Talks Iris And Barry's Broken Engagement

Recent episodes of The Flash dropped plenty of bombshells for its viewers, particularly for fans of one particular pairing. With the possibility of Iris West's (Candice Patton) future death still looming over the show, she was recently proposed to by her superhero boyfriend, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin). The couple celebrated their happy engagement over the course of the subsequent episode, until Iris discovered that Barry had been motivated to propose in an attempt to change the timeline drastically enough to stop Iris' death.

Although the couple's engagement is now broken off, Patton reassured in a recent interview with TVLine that it was done with good intentions.

"I think everybody is kind of rooting for 'WestAllen,'" Patton explained, "but I think Iris has a legitimate concern and fear. No woman or man wants to be proposed to out of fear. I mean, to save your life is a huge thing, but you want your marriage to be based in love. So Iris is going to need some time to think about it, if this is the right thing to do."

With that in mind, Patton reassures that the iconic couple's relationship is by no means doomed. "Iris isn't saying that she doesn't love Barry. She very much does. But she wants the engagement to be everything a woman dreams of — that it's real and romantic and based in love."

Even though The Flash regularly deals with time travel and changing events, Patton believes that Barry would be able to give a better proposal under different circumstances, and reinforce the pair's love for each other.

"I think he's got to be genuine, first of all. Not that he isn't genuine, but he needs to make Iris assured that obviously he wants to save her but that he wants to be with her because he loves her, and she's the only person he wants to be with."

As Patton also revealed, Iris' agency plans to extend beyond her romantic relationship in future episodes, with the actress feeling optimistic that her character will have a direct hand in preventing her own death.
