This Game-Changing Supergirl Concept Is Coming to The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow

In the final moments of the four-show, three-night Invasion! crossover that pitted "heroes vs. aliens" on The CW, Supergirl revealed that she had engaged in a heart-to-heart with the President of the United States.

With shadowy men in black covering up the Dominator attack, the general populace will apparently remain generally unaware that there are intelligent aliens in the universe...but that doesn't mean the government has to play dumb.

And so, at Supergirl's suggestion, The President of the United States plans to create a Department of Extranormal Operations -- the DEO -- on Earth-1, to keep watch against alien invaders and help defend the world in the event of another attack.

The DEO, created by Dan Curtis Johnson and J. H. Williams III in 1998's Batman #550, has been a pretty constant presence in the DC Universe ever since, with comics like Marc Andreyko's critically-beloved Manhunter and the Johnson/Williams Chase series heavily featuring the organization and its star agent, Cameron Chase.

In the comics, it's a shadowy organization that's run by Director Bones, a former supervillain who decided the way to live in comfort was to put his nefarious knowledge to work for the government, so he can steal legally. He's a smart-aleck whose skin is both translucent and poisonous, so that he looks like a skeleton and can kill most normal people who touch him.

On Supergirl, of course, it's run by a grumpy-but-lovable J'Onn J'Onzz, who took over the organization when he assumed the identity of its corrupt and cruel director, Hank Henshaw, years ago. Henshaw, long presumed dead, has recently resurfaced as the Cyborg Superman. Other agents of the DEO include Supergirl (unofficially), Winn Schott (son of the Toyman and a former co-worker of Supergirl's at CatCo) and Alex Danvers, Supergirl's sister and the girlfriend of Maggie Sawyer, a National City detective specializing in metahuman and alien cases.

Don't get too excited about the aliens and creatures we might see come through an Earth-1 DEO, though; executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told reporters on Monday that there are no immediate plans to increase the frequency of alien visits (besides maybe Supergirl's) to the other CW series.

"I think that what's so nice about the shows for us, is that each of the shows has their own identity, especially this season," executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, who works on all four DC/CW series, told reporters at a screening of the Invasion! event on Monday. "It feels like every show has sort of doubled down on what it's about. With Arrow, we've really returned more to the sort of gritty crime drama that it originally was. There's so many echos in this season to the earlier seasons. The Flash has the metahumans and Legends of Tomorrow has time travel and Supergirl doubled down on the alien aspect. I think that's what makes the shows feel different so that you're not watching four hours of the same stuff every week. You're really getting a different flavor and a different world. Whereas, now that possibility's opened, that because they have all faced aliens, there's certainly no plans to have an ongoing or bring up an alien storyline on Arrow. That really feels like the purview of Supergirl."

Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl will cross over with DC's Legends of Tomorrow this week in "Invasion!" a three-part crossover that starts in the final moments of an episode of Supergirl and then plays through the other series. Based on the 1988 comic book event miniseries Invasion! from Keith Giffen, Bill Mantlo, Todd McFarlane, Bart Sears (who, coincidentally, also drew the Justice League Europe title back when it featured Power Girl), and the crossover -- with its marketing title "Heroes vs. Aliens" -- will closely track the plot of that storyline: aliens will be assembled by The Dominators and descend on Earth to bring an end to the "threat" of Earth's burgeoning metahuman community.

In the comics, the Dominion were secretly hoping to build their own super-race, and as a result created a handful of new superheroes in the course of the story.
