What Did Kevin Smith Think Of The LEGO Batman Movie?

DC fans are enjoying Will Arnett's latest turn as the LEGO Dark Knight, and that includes director and general comic enthusiast, Kevin Smith.

On the latest episode of Fat Man on Batman with Marc Bernardin, Smith shared his impression of the latest LEGO film, which centers on Batman's transition from lone wolf to mentor. So far the film is enjoying an 82.78 on ComicBook.com's composite ranking, and Smith seems to agree.

"I had a great time, and I didn't expect to like it as much as I did, to be honest with you. That LEGO Movie is f****** perfection, it is absolute f****** magic, and I had no expectations of that LEGO Movie whatsoever. I was going "c'mon, LEGO Movie?", and it is one of the 20 greatest things ever f****** created by humans. Such a wonderful movie, makes you feel good and s***. Makes you feel hopeful, funny as f***, and Batman was an amazing character with his "darkness", "no parents", like really funny ya know, but one character on the journey and a supporting player."

Smith's high expectations set him up for a letdown, but that is far from the case. "So when they were like "we're going to make a whole movie about that", naturally they had my money and I'm going to go, but I didn't expect they could touch what they did with the LEGO Movie. And for me, they did. They were able to tell you the story of isolation, of a person who's like "no, I got this, I got this", who needs to learn how to work well with others. A kids movie first and foremost. That being said, for me, best Batman movie I saw in the theaters since The Dark Knight."

"So if you know Batman, you know the world of Batman, you know a little bit of DC, this movie has a gazillion jokes, just whipped out for free, just hitting constantly," said Smith. "Works if you're a DC fan, works on that level. Works on the level of a kids movie, like "hey there's a nice little lesson there", and I wasn't "hey where's the popcorn" and s***, I was gripped the whole time. And it also works as a Batman movie. As a Batman fan I was like "my God this is like a f****** Batman fan film made by a fan of every incarnation of Batman, which is like al of us."

In the irreverent spirit of fun that made The LEGO Movie a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble – LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker's hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

Will Arnett reprises his starring role from The LEGO Movie as the voice of LEGO Batman, aka Bruce Wayne. Zach Galifianakis (Hangover films) stars as The Joker; Michael Cera (TV's Arrested Development) as the orphan Dick Grayson; Rosario Dawson (TV's Daredevil) as Barbara Gordon; and Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter films) as Alfred.
