Wonder Woman: This New Ares Concept Art Looks Downright Frightening

Wonder Woman's first villain in the DCEU turned out to be Ares, but some new concept art shows that he once looked very different.

Artist Peter McKinstry drew up a number of concepts for Ares before the character left the art department, but he revealed their final version on social media, saying "This is how 'He' looked when he left the art department...after many versions, sculpted in #zbrush" (via CosmicBookNews).

The "he" McKinstry is referring to is of course Ares. By the time fans see him in the film Ares has a heavily armored costume, based on a hot forge as the metal forms around him. McKinstry's rendition is much closer to the Amazonian armor Diana wears earlier in the film, with a sword forged out of the fires of anger. The helmet is also sporting a more sinister design and is ten times as threatening as the suit that made it into the film.

It isn't known what caused the change in direction, but there are many who most likely would have preferred this version to hit the big screen instead.

Wonder Woman currently enjoys an 84.75 on ComicBook.com's anticipation rankings, and you can submit your rating here.

Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action-adventure from director Patty Jenkins. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins and is written by Allan Heinberg, Geoff Johns, and Zack Snyder. The film stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), David Thewlis, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis (Etta Candy), Danny Huston, Ewen Bremmer, Doutzen Kroes, Samantha Jo (Euboea), Florence Kasumba (Senator Acantha), Said Taghmaoui, Eleanor Matsuura (Epione), Emily Carey (Young Diana), and Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe).

Wonder Woman is in theaters now and will be on home video soon. It's followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; Wonder Woman 2 on December 13, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020.
