Wonder Woman Beats Green Lantern's Total Box Office Gross In One Weekend

Warner Bros. latest foray into the DC Cinematic Universe has made history at the box office, impressed critics and fans alike, and set a new standard for the superhero genre.

Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot's collaboration in Wonder Woman explores the origin of one of the most iconic characters in comic book history. And with an insanely successful opening weekend at the box office, it's already propelled past one of the most disappointing films in the genre's modern era.

Wonder Woman's $223 million opening weekend puts it just over the entire theatrical gross of the 2011 Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds. The film made just $219 million on a budget of $200 million, making it a costly flop and prompting the studio to cancel the plans for the sequel.

Wonder Woman's strong performance means it likely won't suffer the same fate, and both Jenkins and Gadot have expressed enthusiasm create another film chronicling Diana of Themyscira's journey. The sequel has yet to be announced but at this point it's only a matter of time. Warner Bros. is likely holding off the announcement until buzz surrounding the film's debut dies down.

Green Lantern needed to make more than $500 million to turn a profit; cost of the film's marketing was about $100 million itself, not to mention distribution costs. Wonder Woman is already in a good position just after its opening weekend, working on a budget of $150 million.

All in all, it's a sign of good fortune for Warner Bros. and a promising indication that future movies should fair well also.

The film is produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Richard Suckle, with Rebecca Roven, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with RatPac-Dune Entertainment, an Atlas Entertainment/Cruel and Unusual production, Wonder Woman.
