Wonder Woman's Weekend Box Office Smashes DCEU Record

Wonder Woman took a sledgehammer to the box office when it premiered last week. The film's domestic and international box office bang rocketed its opening weekend to record-breaking highs. Many wondered if Wonder Woman could overcomes its new competition this weekend as films like The Mummy entered theaters. Now, it seems like the undead didn't stand a chance against Wonder Woman - and neither did some of the film's DCEU predecessors.

Having launched to a $100 million opening, Wonder Woman doubled its domestic gross this weekend. The film crossed over the $200 million threshold on its second weekend thanks to a small box office drop on Friday. According to Exhibitor Relations, the film is expected to only drop a small 45% in its second weekend overall. That drop will see it rake in an additional $57 million, a number which pushes it to its new domestic total. And, of course - the drop will make Wonder Woman have the best second-weekend box office gross in the whole DCEU.

When Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had its second weekend, the film raked in a close $52 million after experiencing a hefty 68% drop. Suicide Squad came in even worse at a $43 million gross and a 67% drop. And, as for Man of Steel, the Superman flick earned $41 million after a 65% drop.

Wonder Woman's gross of $57 million not only outdoes its predecessors, but its meager drop is worth celebrating. A drop of 45% on a second weekend is rare for blockbusters in Hollywood, and its low share is thanks to the film's overwhelmingly positive reviews. Both critics and fans have had praised the standalone film for its refreshing take on heroism.

Now, it's just a matter of whether Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment can replicate this kind of success with Justice League this November...

The film stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), David Thewlis, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis (Etta Candy), Danny Huston, Ewen Bremmer, Doutzen Kroes, Samantha Jo (Euboea), Florence Kasumba (Senator Acantha), Said Taghmaoui, Eleanor Matsuura (Epione), Emily Carey (Young Diana), and Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe).

Wonder Woman is in theaters now, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash, The Batman, Dark Universe and Man of Steel 2 are currently without a release dates.
