Characters We Want to See in The Wonder Woman Sequel

Wonder Woman succesfully brought the character and her mythos to the big screen, and is a resounding success for the DCEU. Now attention turns towards the inevitable sequel, which will hopefully have Patty Jenkins again at the helm.

Warning, there will be spoilers here for Wonder Woman, so if you haven't seen it yet you've been warned.

The origin story focused first film established that most if not all of the other Gods are dead, so that rules out certain characters like Hermes, Athena, and other Gods that have often found their way into the Wonder Woman books.

The film also dealt a gut punch to fans when Steve Trevor's plane explodes towards the end of the film, presumably killing him in the process. Add in the fact that Diana might never be able to return to Themyscira again, and you've got a big need for some new characters to fill out the roster.

So, while it isn't even formerly annnounced yet, here are five characters that would be fantastic to see in the Wonder Woman sequel, starting with someone to fill Steve Trevor's shoes.

Nemesis

Thomas Tresser was essentially a tweaked version of Steve Trevor in the books. Tresser turned from a vigilante life to become a government operative, eventually making his way to the Department of Metahuman Affairs. Here he worked with an undercover Diana (this was during Allan Heinberg's run) and Sarge Steel.

Tresser frequently went by the name Nemesis, and was much more sarcastic and reckless than Steve Trevor ever was. That said, he still knew what he was doing, and proved a capable ally.

With Steve Trevor gone and most of her human allies older in age since the first film, it might be a great way to introduce a new character that Diana can play off of, and you could certainly do worse than Nemesis.

Ferdinand

While Diana might not be able to return to Themyscira for some time, that doesn't mean Themyscira can't come to her in some instances, resulting in a possible Themysciran Embassy.

Now that the world knows about the Amazons, it would make perfect sense for them to establish some sort of embassy with mankind's world, and an embassy needs a staff. Enter Ferdinand, a chef who happens to be a Kithotaur and is quite endearing.

He recently returned in Greg Rucka's Wonder Woman run, helping Diana regain her sanity after learinign some long kept lies about her home. Here his role wouldn't be as critical, but he could very well be some important comic relief that the first movie had in spades.

He would be a bit taxing on teh effects budget (he is a Kithotaur after all), but if done right he would be completely worth the investment.

Circe

With Ares defeated and no other Gods to cause trouble, the Wonder Woman sequel might need to look at Diana's more magical enemies, including the villainous witch Circe.

Circe has been interpreted many different ways, but the recent appearance in the Greg Rucka-written Rebirth series would fit nicely into several eras. The sequel would likely be set in the modern day, since that is where the first film ends, and Circe's current character is a bit more grounded and believable than some of her past incarnations.

Also having the villain be centered around witchcraft and magic opens up some intriguing possibilities in both plot and visual style, and seeing the hero adapt to Circe's abilities could be interesting as well. She's also had several conflicts with the Gods, and it could be a way to introduce them back into the fold.

First Born

If Magic isn't your cup of tea, then maybe the First Born is, a character that was introduced in Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang's New 52 run.

The First Born has no true name but is actually the first son of Zeus and Hera. After a witch foresaw the newly born son taking over Olympus and sitting on Zeus' throne, he wished to put a stop to it and commanded the witch to kill him.

She didn't however, and abandoned him, only to be taken in by a pack of hyenas. He would later attempt to attack Olympus, and as punishment, Zeus sent him to the core of the earth, and it would 7000 years before he could dig his way out. He sought revenge on the Gods as well as on their latest heir, the last born.

This would be a wonderful way to get the Gods involved without having to bring them back to life, as he could emerge from that 7000-year journey in the modern day or relatively later in the past. Seeing what Jenkins could do with it would be entertaining indeed.

Cheetah

Barbara Ann Minerva has been both a villain and a close ally, a factor that makes her adversarial role hit even harder.

In the current rebirth series, Barbara Ann discovered Diana early in her career as Wonder Woman, where she helped Diana adapt to the modern world. She would eventually become the Cheetah thanks to the manipulations of Veronica Cale, and in this form, Barbara blamed Diana for not saving her from this cruel fate.

With the help of Diana and Etta Candy she would eventually return to human form, but she has been forced back into the Cheetah form since. It's an ongoing struggle as outside of that form she is one of Diana's best friends, and it could make for some compelling drama onscreen.

Throw in a magic wielding Circe and you could have the setup for a great sequel.

Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action-adventure from director Patty Jenkins. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, Princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. The film stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), David Thewlis, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis (Etta Candy), Danny Huston, Ewen Bremmer, Doutzen Kroes, Samantha Jo (Euboea), Florence Kasumba (Senator Acantha), Said Taghmaoui, Eleanor Matsuura (Epione), Emily Carey (Young Diana), and Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe).

Wonder Woman is in theaters now, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash, The Batman, Dark Universe and Man of Steel 2 are currently without a release dates.
