Does Wonder Woman Have A New Gods Easter Egg?

Wonder Woman opened this past weekend as been adored and poured over by fans, and yet one DC Comics Easter egg may have escaped notice.

The moment comes when Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor arrive at port in London after leaving Themiscyra. As Diana walks the street of early 20th-century London, she encounters an escape artist in shackles. Wonder Woman walks past the man, blocking the audience's view, and by the time he reappears he has miraculously escaped his bondage.

Escape artists weren't uncommon during this era of history, so the character may just be set dressing. On the other hand, an escape artist who is that skilled may be a reference to Jack Kirby creation Mister Miracle.

The escape artist on the dock is probably not the best known Mister Miracle, Scott Free, the son of Highfather, ruler of New Genesis. Scott was turned over to Darkseid, the tyrant of Apokolips, in return for custody of Darkseid's son, Orion, as part of brokered peace between the two warring planets. Scott managed to escape Apokolips and flee to Earth, where he eventually became a member of the Justice League.

However, before becoming a member of the Justice League, Scott Free encountered a master escape artist named Thaddeus Brown who operated under the moniker Mister Miracle. Inspired by Scott's story, Thaddeus passed on his costumed persona, as well as his assistant Oberon, to Scott to carry the legacy onto bigger and brighter things. Perhaps that is who Diana encounters on the London dock.

This could be one more hint that Wonder Woman is laying the groundwork for the New Gods in the DC Extended Universe. It is also worth noting that Mister Miracle was one of the many characters to appear in DC Films' new intro, which debuted with Wonder Woman.
