Wonder Woman Fans Launch Petition To Keep Her As U.N. Ambassador

Earlier this year, Wonder Woman was honored in a big way by the United Nations. The DC Comics heroine was given the title of Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women. The superhero was gifted the title not long ago with stars like Lynda Carter in attendance - but her reign came to an abrupt end yesterday. On Friday, it was announced that Wonder Woman would be removed from her post after a flood of complaints.

And, now, fans are fighting back.

Over on Change.org, Chloe Behrens has created an online petition which asks for Wonder Woman to be reinstated as an ambassador.

"It has come to my attention that Wonder Woman has been removed from her role as ambassador for empowerment for the UN. A petition was signed by only 45,000 people wanting to dismiss her role. Their reasons are because 'she is a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit.' Wonder Woman is so much more than appearances and this petition will hopefully prove the point. Wonder Woman is the embodiment of feminism, peace, justice, and truth. Anyone who knows the character knows that what she does advocates for the peace, freedom and rights of all people around the world, much like what the UN strives to do," she wrote.

So far, more than 1,100 fans have supported the petition. An official petition was submitted to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon as well.

The petition reads,"Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent 'warrior' woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character's current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit."

Courtney Simmons, a spokeswoman for DC Entertainment said, "Wonder Woman stands for peace, justice and equality, and for 75 years she has been a motivating force for many and will continue to be long after the conclusion of her UN Honorary Ambassadorship."

Recently, Patty Jenkins wrote a touching letter about Wonder Woman as the director is helming the heroine's standalone film. She said, "The [film's] goal was to tap into what always spoke to me about her — to honor who she was, her legacy, and to make her as universal as she was to all of us little girls who ran around pretending to be Lynda Carter when we were kids. Wonder Woman is the grand universal female hero who didn't have to be lesser in any way."

"She wasn't less powerful, she wasn't less of a woman. She's as beautiful as any woman and as strong as any man. That, to me, is so enduring. There have been so few female characters like that — who weren't small, niche characters or sidekicks. She's a full-blown superhero who lives up to all of your dreams in every way."
