Wonder Woman Writer Reveals How The Little Mermaid Inspired The Movie

Wonder Woman is one of the most iconic superheroes ever to grace the comic book page. And though Lynda Carter starred as the character in the popular television series from the '70s, the Princess of the Amazons has yet to feature in her own big screen movie.

All of that is set to change in just a few short weeks when Wonder Woman debuts in theaters on June 2. And though she is one of the most unique characters in all of the comics canon, her story has many interesting parallels with one of the most famous fairy tale's in history.

Screenwriter Allan Heinberg, who famously charted the adventures of Marvel's Young Avengers as well as a Wonder Woman comic for DC, said that the title character's story is not too different from The Little Mermaid while discussing the film with Entertainment Weekly.

"The story as I see it is The Little Mermaid, specifically Disney's incarnation," Heinberg said. "This is a woman who has been raised in a very protective, sheltered life, she's curious about what life is like outside and she wants to have her own experience. She wants to be where the people are."

Heinberg makes a great point in the broad strokes, but they're also alike in their heroic natures. In the Little Mermaid, Ariel's courage allows her to confront Ursula and foil her schemes.

Diana of Themyscira is shown to forego her own heritage so that she can do what is right.

It will be interesting to see if those are the only cues Wonder Woman takes from the Little Mermaid, or if that's where the comparisons end.

Wonder Woman hits theaters June 2.
