Wonder Woman Director On Why The Film Couldn't Have Been Rated-R

In the last year or so, Hollywood has found a new way to brush up its on-going obsession with superhero fanfare. Right when fans were beginning to bemoan the industry's lack of ingenuity, 20th Century Fox stood up and reintroduced a novel concept for comic book adaptations. The studio pushed both Deadpool and Logan to house R-ratings, and the grittier storylines proved to be successful judging by the films' box office hauls. Still, not every superhero feature is eager to follow in the steps of the X-Men features. Now, the director of Wonder Woman is speaking out about such by stressing why she felt the DC movie didn't need a restricted rating.

Speaking with CinemaBlend, Patty Jenkins said she had one very important reason for keeping Wonder Woman PG-13.

"I cared a lot about it never being an R-rating. And I totally support the movies that do have an R-rating, but in this case I was very aware that little girls were going to want to see the film, and I was very protective of that," Jenkins said.

"So it had to not be Rated R to me. I would have been happy to go for PG, but it's World War I, so we couldn't!"

Of course, Jenkins is right about her observations regarding WWI. The first World War was unlike anything ever seen before in modern warfare. The feud's massive scale and use of deadly, emergent technology made WWI one of the most lethal conflicts of all time. By the war's end, about 40 million people had lost their lives whilst many more were injured. The calamity was unprecedented, and the world was unsure how to recover from such a brutal conflict.

Still, Wonder Woman's focus does not appear to be eyeing the brutality of war; Instead, the movie seems to be centered on how Diana reacts to mankind's savagery and how she is meant to rise above it. The warfare sequences in Wonder Woman will no doubt do their best to depict the horrific nature of WWI, but fans should not expect to see over-the-top blood or dismemberments. If anything, they should be prepared to see Diana's shocked reaction to the war which will be heart-breaking in its own way entirely.

Wonder Woman currently has a 4.10 out of 5 ComicBook User Anticipation Rating, making it the ninth most anticipated upcoming comic book movie among ComicBook.com readers. Let us know how excited you are about Wonder Woman by giving it your own ComicBook User Anticipation Rating below.
