Wonder Woman Director Wants Fans To Let The Heroine Be Her Sexy Self

In a few short days, Wonder Woman is set to return to theaters with her first solo live-action romp. Gal Gadot will reprise her role as Diana Prince from Batman v Superman to educate DCEU fanatics about her origins. With critics gushing over the film, much of Wonder Woman's critics have started to change their tune, but plenty of fans have receipts on their harsh take towards the film. For some, Wonder Woman's so-called skimpy outfit led them to push back on the movie, but Patty Jenkins is coming out to combat those pleas. In a new interview, the Wonder Woman director is asking fans to let Diana be all that she's ever been, sexy outfit and all.

Patty Jenkins recently chatted with the LA Times about her vision for Wonder Woman, and the director was no afraid to talk about the controversies surrounding the heroine's outfit. Some netizens have used social media to condemn the icon because of her costume. For them, Wonder Woman's revealing outfit is something to shame, but Jenkins thinks that's not the case at all. If anything, Wonder Woman's outfit is something to be celebrated as it shows the heroine's confidence.

"I get frustrated by people who think that they're defending [Wonder Woman] by trying to make her lesser," Jenkins admitted. "When people get super critical about her outfit, who's the one getting crazy about what a woman wears? That's who she is; that's Wonder Woman. I want her to look like my childhood fantasy."

"It's not the male gaze that's made little girls buy princess dolls for all these years. They're into it. And so we're into it. Who's been the fan base that's kept Wonder Woman alive all these years? Women. So let her be every glorious thing that she is. Including hot and beautiful and sexy and loving and great and kind."

Of course, Jenkins is not the only person who touts a similar outlook when it comes to Wonder Woman's dress. Fans of the DC Comics character have flooded social media to rally behind the costume choice as they tote its empowering nature. Wonder Woman as been an icon for gender equality and female empowerment for years, and fans want general audiences to know those inspirational traits have nothing to do with one's skirt length. Even while wearing heeled boots and a bustier, Wonder Woman can kick anyone's butt - and she's not afraid to do it.

Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, Princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that's raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins, from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg & Geoff Johns, story by Heinberg & Zack Snyder and Jason Fuchs, and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis, Saïd Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner and David Thewlis.

Wonder Woman opens in theaters June 2, 2017.
