Young Justice Actor Says Green Lantern Flop Led To Show's Demise

The news that Young Justice was returning for a third season was music to the fans of DC comics everywere. The short-lived TV series was loved by many, and it was always thought to have been cancelled way too soon.

Khary Payton, who voices Aqualad on the show, couldn't agree more. The actor has always spoken out about the quality of the DC animated shows, and this one was no different.

During a panel at last year's Convergence, Payton explained to fans exactly why the show went off the air. He quickly pointed the finger at the failed Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds.

This didn't make a lot of sense at first, but Payton went on to explain himself.

"[The reason why the Young Justice toyline failed was that] Green Lantern bombed at the box office. That was a big part of it. We were all kind of grouped together, when you make a toy deal all those decisions go together with all the projects that are happening. So you've got the Green Lantern television show, and Young Justice, and we were all kinda bundled together with that movie. When it didn't do very well at the box office, not that it didn't do very well it did horribly, and it's kind of like having a run on the bank, Walmart and Target were like 'stop making toys' and you can't stop making just the Green Lantern [movie] toys, it's everything that was bundled in there. So when they turned that one off the faucet turned off on all of those projects and all the toys that were funding Young Justice and Green Lantern The Animated Series and that kind of thing. So it was more just bad timing I would say."

Payton definitely knows his stuff, and he's had enough roles in the comic world to understand how everything works. In addition to his role in Young Justice, Payton has voiced Cyborg for numerous projects, including Teen Titans and the Injustice video game series. The actor also stars in The Walking Dead as King Ezekiel.
