Abilisk Revealed In New Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Footage

Tonight, Marvel fans will be treated to the long-awaited first full trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Marvel Studios has already released a sneak peek at the upcoming film, a sequel to the 2014 surprise hit, and an advertisement aired on Friday night that previewed some of the new footage that will be appearing in tonight's trailer.

Among those shots was Drax (Dave Bautista) leaping, daggers at the ready, into the mouth of a giant, squid-like space monster. The creature is called an abilisk and has been seen before in concept art, but this is the first live-action look at the monster.

There is no reference point for such a creature in the Marvel Comics Universe, but director James Gunn revealed that the Guardians of the Galaxy will be hired to hunt one in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The abilisk is apparently an original creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

We still don't know for sure how much of an actual role the abilisk, but the mission sounds like the kind of the thing that makes sense as an opening act introduction to the Guardian's current status quo, something for them to show their skill against before getting into the film's core plot, which involves Star-Lord's father, Ego the Living Planet. Perhaps more of the creature will be featured in tonight's trailer.

Set to the backdrop of 'Awesome Mixtape #2,' Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Glenn Close, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, and Kurt Russell.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in theaters on May 5, 2017.
