Agents of SHIELD: Ming-Na Wen Teases May & Coulson Relationship

07/09/2017 05:30 pm EDT

The last season of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD threw fans for a loop when it came to the real identities of the team members. Agent Melinda May was revealed to be an LMD before she helped AIDA and Dr. Radcliffe slowly but surely replace everyone else with impostors.

Thought it might seem impossible, these interactions helped push the feelings both May and Phil Coulson have been developing for each other. But May was an LMD, and then they were both in the Framework and had more pressing matters to deal with.

Actor Ming-Na Wen spoke about her character's budding relationship with Coulson and whether it would reach the next level while speaking during panel alongside Brett Dalton at Heroes & Villains Con in Nashville this weekend.

"I think what's so fun is that the writers enjoy placating, as well as teasing the audience," Wen said. "So, you know, they had the LMD May kiss Coulson, and they have professed their feelings, but I don't know if ... I think it's more fun not to take the next step. I don't know."

But her former co-star Dalton, who reprised his role as Grant Ward on the new season, disagreed with her. And she acquiesced that everyone has their own opinion about what they want, and not everyone will agree with her.

"So, I don't know," Wen said. "We'll see what happens with May and Coulson. I think it's just so fun to play the two of them, not knowing how to take it to the next step, or the next level."

We'll just have to wait and see where the next season of Agents of SHIELD takes these two characters, but they'll have a lot on their plate before they can get to the romantic tension between them given the team has been kidnapped and Coulson is somewhere on the moon.

Agents of SHEILD is expected to return sometime in early 2018.
