Agents Of SHIELD: The Patriot Gets A Costume In Midseason Finale

Tonight's Marvel's Agents of SHIELD midseason finale episode, titled "The Laws of Inferno Dynamics," held quite a few surprises for fans.

One among them was that SHIELD director Jeffrey Mace (Jason O'Mara) got far more hands-on than he has through most of the season.

Jeffrey Mace is based on the character of the same name from the Marvel Comics Universe, a golden age superhero who went by the name Patriot before eventually taking up the role of Captain America.

The midseason finale episode brought Mace, and Inhuman in the present day in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one step closing to fulfilling his superhero destiny.

As SHIELD assaulted the Chinatown gang hideout where Eli Morrow, endowed with godlike powers, had holed, Jeffrey Mace decided that his superhuman strength could be of use in the field and that it was time for the public to know how the new director of SHIELD really was.

During the assault on Morrow's hideout, Phil Coulson gave the signal and his time struck. Among them was Mace, who stepped out of the shadows wearing black body armor with a shining, silver SHIELD emblem at the center of the chest piece.

The eagle wings of the SHIELD insignia on Mace's costume are elongated further than on the standard SHIELD symbol. This is perhaps an homage to Mace's Patriot costume from the Marvel Comics universe, which prominently features a large eagle with wings outstretched.

Only time will tell if Mace continues to get some use out of his new superhero costume. Marvel's Agents of SHIELD will return for the second half of Season 4, with the new "LMD" subtitle, in 2017.

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
