Rumor: Steve Rogers To Assume New Moniker In Avengers: Infinity War

D23 has just closed its doors, but fans still aren't over the annual event's cinematic gifts. Marvel Studios took to the convention and shared a first-look at Avengers: Infinity War with lucky attendees, and Captain America graced the teaser to debut his fully bearded self. And, now, one report is saying Steve Roger's facial hair is meant to signal his adoption of a rather familiar name.

According to MCU Exchange, the site has been told Avengers: Infinity War plans to transition Steve Rogers from Captain America to the Nomad. There is no telling how accurate the report is at this time given Marvel's tight-lips, but fans are buzzing about the possibility online.

After all, it would make sense for Steve to adopt the new moniker in the wake of Captain America: Civil War. The movie saw the First Avenger abandon his famous shield after a climatic battle against Iron Man, and Steve embraced further embraced fugitive status by breaking out his comrades out of prison. Steve is clearly not responding well to government oversight after the Sokovia Accords proposal, but the man still wants to do good. So, naturally, he's going to need a new name to go by.

Marvel readers will remember the name Nomad as Captain America adopted the moniker very briefly. Steve took on the name in Captain America #180 after he became disillusioned by the federal government and the Secret Empire running the US behind-the-scenes. The hero ditched his famous costume for Nomad's blue-and-yellow uniform, and Steve may have chosen to sport a beard in Avengers: Infinity War to further distance himself from his Captain America aesthetic.

Still, don't expect for the movie to reveal a full-on Nomad suit for the good captain. According to MCU Exchange, the third Avengers film will simply pay homage to Nomad's classic look with a dressed-down costume. There is no way to know if Steve will return to his Captain America title by the end of Avengers 3 & 4, but the MCU will no doubt want the icon back in some form or fashion. Steve may not be the man who suits back up in the red-white-and-blue suit, but there are others who could don the costume. Word has it that both Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes would be up for the job...
