Guardians Of The Galaxy: Kevin Feige On The Stan Lee-Watcher Theory

Warning! Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 lie below!

If you have not had a chance to see the new Guardians of the Galaxy flick, then you are missing out on one of Stan Lee's best cameos. The iconic comics creator is know for his on-screen flings in the MCU, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 just tied all of his appearance together. In the film, fans watch as Stan Lee appears and tells a group of aliens known as the Watchers about his Earth exploits. The scene confirms Stan Lee has been playing the same character in every MCU title, but it begged the question of who exactly the man was playing. And, now, the president of Marvel Studios is addressing the question head-on.

In an interview with Collider, Kevin Feige was asked is Stan Lee might be one of The Watchers in some way. Here is what the producer had to say:

"Well, I wouldn't say you saw Uatu. I would say that you saw some Watchers," Feige started.

"Stan Lee clearly exists above and apart from the reality of all the films, so the notion that he could be sitting there, on a cosmic pit stop, during the jump gate sequence in Guardians was something very fun," the producer continued. "James had that idea and we shot that cameo and loved it so much that you see it a couple of times in the movie. It wasn't in there, for a long time, and we put it back in, towards the end of the process."

For now, it seems like Lee really isn't playing one of the Marvel Universe's most ancient creators. The Watchers are an ever-present part of the comic-verse as they spread across the galaxy, observing lifeforms and preserving their knowledge. The writer may be in cahoots with the big-headed race, but Lee isn't ready to throw in with the cosmic beings just yet. In fact, it looks like the man may be playing his own special kind of omnipresent hero in the MCU. Just, don't call him god; It is clear Captain America doesn't like that kind of heresy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 currently has an 87.79 ComicBook.com Composite Score, the third-highest ComicBook.com Composite Score for a comic book movie of all time. Let us know what you thought of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 by giving it your own ComicBook.com user rating below.
