Inhumans: Iwan Rheon Explains Maximus' Fundamental Differences With Black Bolt

There's a revolution coming to the Inhuman city of Attilan, and Maximus the Mad is at the forefront of it.

ComicBook.com caught up with the cast of Marvel's Inhumans at Comic-Con International: San Diego and Iwan Rheon, who plays Prince Maximus, explained where the conflict between Maximus and the rest of the Royal Family comes from.

"The Inhumans live in a very rigid, cast system where once they go through Terrigenesis whatever power they then develop basically defines them as Inhuman and where they sit within that caste system," Rheon explains. "Maximus has no power so, in theory, he should have gone right to the bottom but because he's the brother of the king he's been allowed to be in the royal family.

"So he really feels like a man of the people," Rheon continues. "He believes that this caste system is wrong and he wants to change it and when the imminent threat of humanity discovering them comes he thinks that he has his own idea and ideology of how to deal with this system and how to free the people. So that's where you get the conflict with Black Bolt and the rest of the royal family."

It's interesting that Rheon states Maximus has no powers. In the Marvel Comics universe, Maximus did not initially show any new abilities following his Terrigenesis. However, as he grew older, he discovered he had the ability to affect and control the minds of others. Perhaps the Maximus of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will also discover these hidden abilities as the series progresses.

In Marvel's Inhumans, after the Royal Family of Inhumans is splintered by a military coup, they barely escape to Hawaii where their surprising interactions with the lush world and humanity around them may prove to not only save them,but Earth itself.

The Inhumans, a race of superhumans with diverse and singularly unique powers, were first introduced in Marvel Comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1965. Since that time, they have grown in prominence and become some of the most popular and iconic characters in the Marvel Universe. Marvel's The Inhumans will explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family.

Marvel's Inhumans stars Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Serinda Swan as Medusa, Iwan Rheon as Maximus, Ken Leung as Karnak, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, Mike Moh as Triton, Sonya Balmores as Auran, and Ellen Woglom.

Marvel's Inhumans is executive produced by Scott Buck (Dexter, Marvel's Iron Fist) with Jeph Loeb (Marvel's Daredevil, Marvel's Jessica Jones, Marvel's Luke Cage) and Jim Chory (Marvel's Daredevil, Marvel's Jessica Jones, Marvel's Luke Cage). Buck is serving as showrunner. Roel Reine (Admiral, Black Sails) will direct the first two episodes, which will debut in IMAX theaters. Marvel's Inhumans is co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Studios.

The first two episodes of Marvel's Inhumans will premiere in IMAX theaters on Friday, Sept. 1. The full eight-episode series will air on ABC on Fridays as part of the network's fall television lineup.
