Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite Trailer Released

12/03/2016 03:40 pm EST

Sony and Capcom have released the official announcement trailer for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is the next installment of the fan-favorite fighting game that features characters from the Marvel Comics Universe, Street Fighter, and other iconic Capcom video games.

The trailer features Capcom's Mega Man and Ryu taking on Marvel's Iron Man and Captain Marvel. The trailer was just a cinematic shown during the PlayStation Experience presentation earlier today. The presenter promised gameplay footage would be shown later tonight on ESPN 2 during the Capcom Cup 2016 finals.

"It was deeply inspiring for our development team to join forces again with Marvel and we can't wait for our fans to experience the benefits of that collaboration first hand," said Michael Evans, Director of Production for Capcom USA in a statement. "With Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, our goal is to provide memorable experiences and infinite gameplay possibilities for players of all skill levels."

Rumors have been circulating concerning a new installment of the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise. Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will be the series fourth installment, - following Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes, Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, and Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds - though the first Marvel vs. Capcom game was preceded by games like X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, and X-Men vs. Street Fighter, and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street.

No official details about the new Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite were revealed at the event. Rumor has it that the game will seriously overhaul the series' fighting game formula. This includes dropping the number of combatant on a team from three down to two. Another rumor suggests that Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will not include any of Marvel's X-Men characters, which have been a staple of all of Capcom's Marvel fighting games so far.

The presentation also revealed that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, the definitive edition of the most recent installment of the franchise, will be downloadable on PlayStation 4 via the PlayStation Network today, with plans for digital release on other platforms in 2017. MARVEL VS. CAPCOM: INFINITE is currently in development and will simultaneously release on the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, and Windows PC worldwide in late 2017. The game has been difficult to acquire in recent years as legal issues between Marvel and Capcom saw the game removed entirely from digital distribution platforms.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite arrives in 2017. Check out some screenshots from the trailer below, and look for gameplay footage and new details later this evening.

The Capcom Cup 2016 finals airs tonight at 5:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
