New Logan Photo Gives Close-Up Look At Stephen Merchant's Caliban

When Logan hits theaters next year, the film promises to introduce fans to a new style of superhero affair. The blockbuster will be the fourth and final Wolverine flick featuring Hugh Jackman, and its tone will be far darker than any projects which came before it. The Australian star will be joined by talent like Patrick Stewart and comedian Stephen Merchant. And, now, a new photo of the latter has emerged that's giving fans a better look at the mutant Caliban.

UP NEXT: A Look At Stephen Merchant's Caliban

Over on Twitter, the founder of Latino Review shared the grainy image with fans. Kellvin Chavez posted the picture of Caliban, and fans can see that the mutant's entire face is covered in protective gear. "New image of Stephen Merchant as Caliban in Hugh Jackman's final Wolverine movie," he captioned.

This image looks very similar to the one which 20th Century Fox debuted back in October. The official Instagram for Merchant shared the image, and the actor's character was still covered head-to-toe. A wide-brim hat was hat neatly upon his bald head, and Caliban's striking pale eyes were all fans could see since his lower face was covered by a bandana.

If you don't know who Caliban is, don't worry; You can catch-up on the mutant and his past before Logan hits theaters. The character was brought into the Marvel Universe as one of the Morlocks, a sewer-dwelling group of mutants who are friendly with the X-Men. Caliban is a particularly gifted member as he has a mutant ability that allows him to track other mutants. In the comics, Caliban was useful enough to be turned into a Horseman of Apocalypse, but he eventually broke away and returned to the X-Men before later dying in battle.

Logan will not mark the first time fans have seen this character on the big screen. Earlier this year, Caliban appeared in X-Men: Apocalypse as another actor named Tómas Lemarquis brought him to life.

Logan takes place in the year 2024, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.
