Ryan Reynolds On If Deadpool Sequel Will Address Awards Attention

Deadpool in many ways is the little engine that could, as the property was in development limbo before the test footage was leaked to the public, resulting in the worldwide phenomenon that fans know and love today.

Hollywood loves a great underdog story, and that has followed the project into awards season. Deadpool has already received nominations from the Producers Guild, Writers Guild, and Visual Effects Society among others, and even managed to snag a nod from the Golden Globes for best motion picture -musical or comedy and best performance by an actor in a motion picture - musical or comedy for Ryan Reynolds.

That has led to a mini campaign of sorts to see the merc with a mouth represented at the Oscars, the mountaintop of Hollywood. While most are talking about the original still, Reynolds recently spoke to Variety about the upcoming sequel, and if all the attention the film has received will make its way into the script.

"I don't know that he'll talk about awards season, but maybe something about how great the year has been," Reynolds says. "Maybe Deadpool will have, like, 20% more self-loathing because of it."

Hopefully, all the attention doesn't go to the skilled mercenary's head.

Based upon Marvel Comics' most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Deadpool is directed by Tim Miller and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Deadpool stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, Leslie Uggams, Brianna Hildebrand and Stefan Kapičić.

Deadpool's Holiday Blu-ray package is now available and retails for $25.99. Deadpool 2 is expected to begin filming next year and is due out January 12, 2018.
