Spider-Man: Homecoming Director Explains Many MCU Easter Eggs Choices

When Spider-Man: Homecoming arrives in theaters next month, it will do so with an abundant amount of connections and references to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. The joint venture between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios follows Peter Parker's more contained journey but ties him and his buddies to the grander franchise in more than enough ways.

For director Jon Watts, dropping as many connections and Easter eggs for fans of the franchise was a fun choice he made while putting together the script of the film. It's something he decided on as a writer/director with understanding of where Spider-Man and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are headed in the future.

"It's not coming down in any way," Watts said. "It's more like you're just a bunch of people sitting around writing fan fiction. I remember the initial list of all of the stuff in that scene when Happy's talking about the magic belt. Chris Warden and I, who wrote that part of the movie, we wrote up just a page long monologue of all the things that they could have. It was basically a page-long monologue of Easter eggs."

Ultimately, the page long monologue was limited to three items which will be seen and heard by audiences who watch Homecoming in a couple of weeks.

"There's no dictates really," Watts said. "It's more just the ball is in my court to come up with as many fun things as I could, and just see how many we can squeeze into the movie, because everyone is just a fan. You're working with the biggest fans in the world basically, so all of that stuff is welcomed."

The director went on to compares his efforts on Spider-Man to director James Gunn's work with the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. In introducing Star-Lord and the gang, Gunn had an opportunity to journey through uncharted territories of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Watts thinks Spider-Man: Homecoming offers a similar but more grounded opportunity.

"It's absolutely a part of the world that hasn't been explored," Watts said. "The ground-level world, you know? In the way that Guardians just really got into the space part of it, you know? The outer galaxy element. In the same way, I got to just explore the day-to-day."

"There's so much," Watts added, encouraging fans to keep their eyes and ears peeled during repeat viewings of the film. "Yeah. There's so many tiny little connections and references and Easter eggs."
