Nick Fury Was Meant To Be Peter's Mentor in Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man finally made his long-awaited entrance into the MCU last year, and fans have Iron Man to thank for the debut. Tony Stark recruited the Queens hero to assist him in a climatic battle with Captain America when the Avengers butted heads in Germany. But, when Spider-Man: Homecoming entered into development, the film's director saw another man mentoring Peter Parker.

Recently, io9 did an extensive report on the upcoming Spider-Man movie, and Jon Watts delved out new details about the flick. The director revealed to the site that he initially saw Nick Fury acting as Spider-Man's mentor rather than Iron Man. Here's what io9 had to say about the change:

"Interestingly, while Tony was the obvious choice, especially after the events of Civil War, Watts created images of Nick Fury as the mentor in the story in early "mood reels" before getting the job. "I don't know what the situation would be," he said. "But that would be a person he'd want to get in trouble with."

For Spider-Man fans, having Nick Fury oversee Peter isn't a novel idea. The two characters have an intertwined history in the comics, and Marvel's animated series have explored the SHIELD Director's influence on Peter in the past. However, when it comes to the MCU, the wall-crawling hero has a more pressing opportunity to buddy up with Tony Stark. The characters had great chemistry in Captain America: Civil War, and Iron Man's integral role in the MCU helps tie Spider-Man into the franchise with ease.

In a way, Spider-Man is still receiving some of Nick Fury's oversight in his standalone. Iron Man has been directed by Fury even if it was under duress at times. The eye-patched spy provided guidance to Tony Stark during Iron Man 2 when he was suffering from blood poisoning, and Fury stepped up to oversee the Avengers when the team finally assembled. Bits and pieces of the brusque character will surely be passed down to Peter through Iron Man, and Spider-Man will become all the more badass for it.
